Educational Bursary and Grants

The IFSSH will support applications for Educational Bursaries according to the criteria listed below:

IFSSH Educational Bursary:

1.         One of the main aims of the IFSSH is to promote Hand Surgery internationally.  This is done in many ways, e.g.  Committee reports, three yearly Congresses and outreach initiatives.

2.         The latter has been financed by private initiative and privately generated funds.

3.         The reserve fund of the IFSSH now generates some money to sponsor worthy educational programms, which will promote Hand Surgery.

4.         This IFSSH Educational Bursary is available to train prospective Hand Surgeons, to support workshops and seminars on Hand Surgery.

5.         Sponsorship is ONLY available to further Hand Surgery in historically disadvantaged communities, or to establish a Hand Surgery service.  An undertaking must be signed that “medical migration” will not take place i.e. a trainee moving/establishing him/her selfs after qualification in a “developed” area.

6.         A total of US $10 000-20 000 per year may be allocated to one or more projects.  The allocation and discretion will rest with the Executive Council of the IFSSH.

7.         The application will only be considered if all of the following criteria are met:

(1)        Application by a Member of an IFSSH National Society.

(2)        Application recommended by the Executive of the Member National Society.

(3)        Purpose of the project/initiative defined.

(4)        Who will benefit from this sponsorship?

(5)        How will those in point (4) be benefited?

(6)        What are the long-term effects of this initiative/project?

(7)        Who will be involved?

(8)        Detailed itinerary/programme.

(9)        Detailed budget.

(10)      How should the money be transferred?  Banking details are essential.

(11)      Who takes full responsibility for the project/initiative, and for the proper spending of the money?  Full and detailed private and professional addresses, contact telephone and fax numbers, email address and professional status are needed.

(12)      A full and detailed report will be sent to the Secretary-General of the IFSSH one month after completion of the project.

Written application may be sent by fax or email (followed by the original application by ordinary mail) to the Secretary-General of the IFSSH, who will submit the request to the Executive for deliberation.

IFSSH Congress Assistance Grants :

"The IFSSH Executive has decided to consider assisting hand surgeons financially to allow them to attend one of the IFSSH Congresses. It is intended for surgeons who come from poor or developing communities who earn very little  e.g. about US$1000 /month, and who, without financial assistance, would not be able to attend the international meeting. Applying for financial support depends heavily on the integrity of the individual who applies. Applicants should give reasons for requesting the support e.g. monthly income, absence of any other sponsors, motivation for attending the congress, amount needed (a maximum limit will be applied), professional position including hospital, field of work, work experience, supporting letter from a chief, superintendent, head of department and how the knowledge and experience gained would benefit the applicant.

An application does not mean that funds would be automatically granted. Each application would be individually evaluated and depend on the availability  of funds. Forward applications to the Secretary-General of the IFSSH (see contact details under "Officers").
